Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been an effective, time tested healing modality for thousands of years. Understanding the framework of TCM and incorporating acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, moxibustion, cupping, Tuina, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, dietary recommendations and other supplemental therapies, a practitioner can treat a wide variety of conditions. When administered by a trained, licensed Practitioner of Oriental Medicine/Acupuncturist, needling is sterile and safe. Patients often report minimal to no sensation upon needle insertion and it is quite common that patients fall asleep during treatment due to acupunctures calming effects. As is the case with modern Western medicine, each patient responds differently to TCM therapies and results vary. TCM can be a great stand alone treatment modality for certain ailments and it is also effective as a complimentary treatment to Physician, Chiropractor and Physical Therapist care. 

What can acupuncture treat?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) utilizes acupuncture, cupping, moxibustion, gua sha, electro-stimulation, manual therapy and more. These therapies can address a wide range of health issues including, but not limited to the following:

Appointments

ACUPUNCTURE 

Acupuncture treatment includes a medical history review, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) evaluation, diagnosis and treatment plan followed by acupuncture and/or other supplemental therapies by a licensed (PA, TX) and nationally certified (NCCAOM) Practitioner of Oriental Medicine/Acupuncturist (L.Ac.). Initial treatment-$100. Follow-up treatment- $85

Note: Chinese herbal consultation, Tuina and other supplemental therapies may be included at the practitioners discretion.

ACU-FACIAL

Acupuncture for the purpose of facial rejuvenation.

Cosmetic acupuncture is a safe and effective method of achieving firmer skin on the face by inserting very thin needles into the skin to promote collagen and eslastin production.

TUINA/ASIAN BODYWORK ACUPRESSURE
CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE

Tuina is a supplemental therapy of acupuncture, classified as Asian Bodywork, rooted in the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Acupressure and various manual manipulation techniques are applied to stimulate acupuncture channels and points as well as sinew channels and cutaneous regions associated with TCM theory. Tuina is a great form of therapy for those who want to receive the benefits of a TCM evaluation, diagnosis and acupuncture treatment but prefer a needle free experience.

Note: Initial treatment for new clients is required for intake, health history, and treatment plan.

Includes Manual Therapy (Tuina) and/or other supplemental therapies by a licensed (PA, TX) and nationally certified (NCCAOM) Practitioner of Oriental Medicine/Acupuncturist (L.Ac.) and AOBTA certified practitioner. Initial treatment- $125. Follow-up treatment- $100

Traditional Chinese medicinal herbal consultation. Includes a medical history review, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) evaluation, diagnosis, treatment plan and herbal prescription and/or other supplemental therapies by a licensed (PA, TX) and nationally certified (NCCAOM) Practitioner of Oriental Medicine/Acupuncturist (L.Ac.). Consultation-$50 + Cost of herbs

Note: Only book this option if you solely want an herbal consultation and do not want acupuncture. Herbal consultations are included in initial and follow-up acupuncture treatments when deemed an appropriate therapy by the practitioner.

Insurance 

Laurel Highlands Acupuncture is not an in-network provider for insurance. We can provide a superbill upon request but it is important that you contact your insurance company before making an appointment to find out if pre-authorization is required and to learn if your insurance provider covers acupuncture and the condition for which you are seeking treatment.

What is "Dry Needling"?

"Dry needling" is acupuncture described in modern biomedical terminology. The techniques of needling deeply into muscular regions of the body are an aspect of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) training and not a contemporary concept. The difference is that acupuncture licensure generally requires approximately four years of education and training at a masters degree level accredited school and standardized testing from a national board (NCCAOM). For example, upon graduation I had logged 1010 clinic hrs and had seen 495 patients. By contrast, dry needling certifications can be obtained in some states with as little as 40hrs of hands on training. This level of training does not meet the minimum standards to be licensed to perform acupuncture in Pennsylvania. Most states have acupuncture boards which determine a minimum standard to above all else, ensure public safety. When lower standards are introduced by other healthcare practitioners and their boards the risk to public safety is increased. Physical therapists (PT's) are a valuable asset to the healthcare community and have many skills to aid patients with healthcare concerns. However, please be aware that acupuncture is not currently in the scope of practice for PT's in the state of Pennsylvania. In the interest of public safety, we encourage those interested in acupuncture to seek out a state licensed acupuncturist who has the educational and training standards required by the Pennsylvania Acupuncture Board.

About the Practitioner

Kenneth Greep M.AcOM, L.Ac, Dipl. O.M. (NCCAOM) is a licensed Practitioner of Oriental Medicine/Acupuncturist (PA) (TX) and also an AOBTA certified practitioner specializing in Tuina. He received his Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in 2008 from the Academy of Oriental Medicine at Austin (AOMA) after four years of extensive training under the guidance and supervision of some of the best Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners in the world. After spending 15 years in Austin, TX, Ken and his wife Jaime, both originally from Mount Pleasant, PA decided to return home with their two children to be closer to family, friends and the beautiful Laurel Highlands. When he's not caring for patients or spending time with his family, Ken enjoys volunteering time to serve his community, art and architecture, music, reading and writing, fishing, landscaping, Tai chi, photography, watching historical documentaries and helping others whenever possible.

The Masters degree program at AOMA was one of the best in the US. Prior to graduation students were required to perform over 1000 hrs of clinical training supervised by some of the most esteemed practitioners in the country. Training included acupuncture, Chinese herbology, biomedicine, mind/body exercises, Tui na and more. Obtaining a Masters or Doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine requires years of extensive training and NCCAOM board examinations and certification is the standard for most states to issue licensure.
